The buzz around this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer that included striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.
A Different Direction
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio warned that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words hints that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it kicked off the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—qualities that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs only possible if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a personal story.
The series is also notoriously flexible, letting players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be solved in a variety of manners, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can anticipate a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
