Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Significant Partnership Forged Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
